International Internet Day Internet Day has to be international, because that’s part of what the internet is all about. Think for a moment what the internet has made possible… We use it for work, even connecting to workplaces without a physical address. We connect to new and old friends, sharing pieces of our lives with more people than we could ever invite to our birthday party. We shop in stores which have no windows or doors, non-existent except on the internet. We send letters, documents, pictures and sound files in seconds with no envelopes or stamps. We speak with people in every corner of the world with no phone or long-distance charges. The internet has changed 1.97 billion people’s lives, the estimated internet population as of June 30, 2010. How has it affected you? |

National Horseless Carriage Day It’s difficult to believe that, not so long ago, there was life without cars. In Europe, the first car rolled around in 1769. In America we had to wait till the end of the 19th century for the first horseless carriage to arrive. In 1900, the cars were operating on 3 kinds of power, steam, electricity and gasoline. Soon the gasoline engines won because of the discovery in 1901 of vast oil fields in Texas. Ransom Olds in Lansing, Michigan constructed a steam carriage in 1887. Later, in 1896, he started building gasoline-powered cars, the Oldsmobiles, and moved to Detroit. Take a look at the pictures of those first cars. Wouldn’t you like to exchange your own car for one of those beauties? |

International Magic Week Does that man have four cards in his hands or only one? And where was that rabbit hidden before it showed up in that big hat? Floating people without cords, disappearing cards, beautiful girls cut in half (and put together again..), with magic everything seems to be possible. When I was a little kid, I could watch those tricks for hours, thinking that those magicians had some very special gifts. Growing older, I learned that those amazing spectacles were just a question of fast fingers and lots of distraction, an illusion. But still.. even knowing that it’s not real, for me those tricks are still like… magic! |

National Bologna Day For Americans, a bologna (baloney) sandwich is almost as common as a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. This popular meat, named after the city of Bologna, Italy, is an inexpensive member of the lunch meat family. Often, bologna is accused of being "mystery meat", but mostly it is made from either beef or pork or a combination of both meats, and there are strict requirements by the USDA regarding what may and may not be included. Sold either in rings or slices, bologna still remains a favorite American food. When I was a kid, my grandma used to send us to the butcher shop to pick up some meat for her. Johnny Leyen was so good to us! He would always give us a chunk of ring bologna to eat on the way home. Peeling the casing off before biting into our treat was half the fun of it. What's your favorite way to eat bologna, just as a bologna sandwich, or maybe baked or fried? Besides sandwiches, do you eat it in other dishes, like salads? Jump over to our Facebook page and post your ideas! |

National Stamp Collecting Month Who didn’t collect stamps when he was a child? I certainly did. First, I collected all the stamps I could find. For hours I was soaking them from the envelopes and putting them into albums. Then I became more selective. Only certain countries were welcome and with them I learned about the different animals, plants and buildings. Something that had started as just a child’s hobby turned out to be a very educational project. The albums have been untouched for years now. Do you also have some of those “forgotten” albums, waiting till the next generation will discover the fun of stamp collecting? |

National Roller Skating Month Declared by President Ronald Reagan in 1983, National Roller Skating Month was declared to remind families of this beneficial form of exercise and source of fun. My mother tells me of her being able to roller skate both up and down the Michigan Street hill in Grand Rapids. Roller skates were a primary method of transportation for her in her youth. Now, many people have forgotten about this sport, which burns as many calories as jogging. National Roller Skating Month |

National Gumbo Day As the chef in today's video says, the word gumbo means okra in its original language. Some people don't care for okra, but the properties of this vegetable naturally thicken this soup/stew. Some people add more broth to create soup, others like it thicker, like stew. The flavor of this dish is so terrific, you'll want to make it many times this fall and winter, not just today on National Gumbo Day. |

Some go to a school when they're old enough, others stay home with parents still being the teacher. There can also be a neighbor who shows us how to build something or tend our garden, a music teacher who shows us how to express ourselves through music, or a Sunday School teacher who teachs us about spiritual things. |

National Lace Day Did you know that there is lace made with needle and thread, cutwork, bobbins and a pillow, with a textile strip, macramé, crocheted lace, knitted lace, on a machine, or stitched with embroidery threads? So many ways to make something with such a simple name! Historians think the craft may have begun in the first half of the 14th century in Flanders, which is the northern half of Belgium. I don't think many people today will take up the craft of lace-making, but it's really interesting to read about and see how much work goes into it. You might prefer the cute lace flowers made by a darling college girl to help put herself through school. |
