Paul Bunyan Day

When I was young, about a hundred years ago, I had a book about Paul Bunyan. I read it over and over. I loved the fanciful story of how the Great Lakes were formed, and other bigger than life situations that Paul and his blue ox, Babe, got themselves into. Use this day to refresh your memory about this folklore giant, and tell your kids about him if they don't already know.

Chocolate Pudding Day

Chocolate pudding was often considered appropriate for invalids or children, as well as a dessert. Containing milk and eggs, along with the calories of chocolate, those with poor appetites due to ill-health could benefit from chocolate pudding. Due to artificial flavorings and ingredients used in the present-day mixes, it is not necessarily still seen as healthy, however, if you make it from scratch, it will still give you the benefits of milk, eggs and dark chocolate, so go ahead and enjoy a healthy, delicious dessert!

National Pink Day

Now stop that complaining! There's nothing wrong with celebrating the color pink one day out of the year. To celebrate this day, how about drinking pink lemonade, or ordering a strawberry shake. You could add pink food coloring to mashed potatoes or a glass of milk. Decorate your table or desk with pink roses or carnations, and serve pink salmon for dinner.

Pink is often associated with girls, but a man wearing a pink dress shirt can look really great. And, of course, the pink ribbon is the international symbol of breast cancer awareness. So don't panic! Be in the pink!

Life would be a lot different without dairy products, right? Cookies and ____, bagels with ____ ____, cake and ___ ___, Cheerios and ___, macaroni and ____. So, today is the first day of summer. How will you spend your summer? Will your goal be only to relax, or will you decide that this is the summer that you'll learn to __________, or that you'll visit _________, or something else? Will your children spend the entire summer doing nothing, or will they join a library summer reading club or take some lessons in something they don't have time for during the school year? Eat Your Vegetables Day

Everyone knows that eating vegetables every day is a healthy habit to develop. Here are some ideas for introducing vegetables to your children early in life:
  • Introduce your babies to vegetables from the time they can eat solid food. Steam and mash turnips, squash, or carrots, add just a little butter, and feed them with a spoon. Or prepare whole lima beans or green beans, diced cooked carrots or potatoes, or small pieces of other vegetables for them to pick up with their fingers.
  • Let the kids help you wash, peel or cut up vegetables to keep ready to eat in the fridge. Place them in a specific part of your refrigerator with a "snacking with no permission needed" rule. If they know the veggies are unlimited, they might be more inclined to eat them.

National Fudge Day

Fudge is a crystalline candy and controlling the sugar solution crystallization is the key to delicious, smooth fudge. One of the most important aspects of any candy is the final texture. Temperature separates hard caramels from fudge and tiny microcrystals of sugar in fudge gives fudge its firm but smooth texture. The secret to successful fudge is getting these crystals to form at just the right time.

If this is too complicated, you can just take a trip to Mackinac Island and visit Murdick's Fudge Shop.

Flag Day

I remember my dad's funeral service. He fought in World War II, so he had a military service. The military personnel who officiated were solemn, but still caring and respectful. We were outside, in the military cemetery. The sound of taps echoing among the trees was so touching. Then, when they folded the American flag and presented it to my mother, I gained a whole new appreciation for the flag and what it means.

Turkey Lovers' Month

Now who couldn't love a face like that? Turkeys need to be loved, just like anybody else!
Although most people "talk turkey" in November, around Thanksgiving Day, this month has purposely been chosen to emphasize the year-round value of turkey. In just a 3-ounce serving, there are 26 grams of protein, only 1 gram of fat, and only 120 calories. Roasting a whole turkey is relatively easy, but turkey is also available in many other cuts, such as cutlets, tenderloins, and ground turkey. Whether your cook prefers to use the stovetop, microwave, oven or grill, there is a suitable recipe for everyone!

National Iced Tea Day
Iced tea had started to appear in the USA during the 1860s. Seen as a novelty at first, during the 1870s it became quite widespread. Not only did recipes appear in print, but iced tea was offered on hotel menus, and was on sale at railroad stations. It is not unusual to read that iced tea was popularized, perhaps even created, at the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis by Richard Blechynden, but this appears to be an "urban legend".
Iced tea's popularity in the United States has led to an addition to standard flatware sets: the iced tea spoon is a teaspoon with a long handle, suitable for stirring sugar into glasses. In the summer, iced tea is at its most popular.

Aesop's birthday

A fable is a short moral story, especially one with talking animals as characters. Many people have learned the lessons of Aesop as children. It's interesting to think that he was born a slave, but that his second master gave him his freedom as a reward for his intelligence and wit. Aesop was so wise that many fables were attributed to him that were not actually his. How wonderful that through storytelling, these delightful fables have stayed alive for hundreds of years.

National Rocky Road Day

In 1929, after the stock market crash, the founder of a company called Dreyer's was looking for a way to make people smile, in spite of the Great Depression. He used his wife's sewing scissors to cut up walnuts and mini marshmallows, then mixed them with delicious chocolate ice cream. He called it Rocky Road as a sign of the times. It worked, and Rocky Road Ice Cream is still making many people smile today!
