Natonal Polka Month

Dancing is great exercise. Whether you choose the waltz, jazz, ballet, tap dancing, or this month's focus, the polka. The polka is very common at wedding receptions. Many times, it's even danced by two women, friends, sisters, whatever. It's just seen as a fun dance, not necessarily a romantic dance form.
This would be a great month to start dancing. Why not try the polka first?

Happy National Puzzle Day! Did you know that putting together jigsaw puzzles is good exercise for your brain? It also helps to keep spacial reasoning intact. Not sure what that is? Don't worry about it! Just have fun with a puzzle today!
Truus and I can both remember our mothers having a jigsaw-in-progress set up when we were kids. It was almost impossible to pass by the table without putting in a piece or two. It was also a great way to pass a few minutes while waiting for someone to pick us up, or waiting for dinner, or whatever.

Blueberry Pancake Day

On our honeymoon, we went camping in the middle of a National Forest. Alvin had a pickup truck with a camper on the back, which was outfitted with a built-in bed, some little storage cupboards, and a small table. It was August.
I woke up the first morning, and realized I was alone in the camper truck. I let myself relax for a couple of minutes before getting out of the truck to see where my new husband had gone.
The sun was shining through the trees, and lighting up the dew-covered spider webs to look like a fairyland! I'll never forget how beautiful the glistening world around me looked. Then I realized that a delicious aroma was coming from the other side of the truck. I went over to see what it was. Alvin had gathered wild blueberries from the forest, and to go with the coffee he had brewed over the campfire, he had made blueberry pancakes. A small arrangement of wildflowers were in a glass on the table. I was convinced that I had married the most wonderful man in the world!

Mozart's birthday

Today is Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's birthday. You might be more familiar with just the last name, Mozart. I have always loved his music, because it is a little bit playful, but still beautiful. I can remember attending a play about Mozart when I was a child. It portrayed him as a person who loved to play jokes on people, and who was happy most of the time. I also played several of his pieces during my days as a piano student.
It has been said that listening to Mozart's music improves your mind. Some people say the effect, known as The Mozart Effect, is only temporary, about 15 minutes. Others believe it is a continuous, gradual effect. Some teachers play it during classtime, for example, while students are writing essays or studying for tests.
Today's video shows a baby who is enjoying some music by Mozart. It is also said that this music will increase a baby's intelligence. Of course, every mother says her own baby is the most intelligent of any baby ever born, so we're not sure of the results.
In any case, Mozart was a prodigy, and his music is uplifting and beautiful! Enjoy it today on his birthday!

Happy Mozart's birthday!

Hot Air Balloon Week

Hot air balloons have, for a long time, been a romantic symbol of freedom. To soar high above the earth, in a balloon which has no engine, and is usually made of beautiful colors, is a symbol of beauty and peace. Hot air balloons have been featured in movies, music, and there are several hot air balloon festivals around the country.
Today's website includes some beautiful hot air balloon photography. The website explains, very understandably, how a hot air balloon works. So if you're thinking of trying a hot air balloon trip today, in honor of Hot Air Balloon Week, you'll have plenty of knowledge.

Fun At Work Day

Work happens every day. What? You already noticed that? But how much do you look forward to going to work? Or do you work at home? How much convincing do you have to do to get yourself over to your desk and to get to work?
Today is Fun At Work Day! Today's website and video are full of ideas. They all tell us about the importance of having fun at work. A famous proverb says, "Laughter is like medicine for the heart."
My husband is the king of fun. He knows how to make the most boring things fun. It's why people love him so much! (including me) If you're always serious, people won't be drawn to you. But if you can say something funny (never at another's expense) or do something creative and funny that will brighten up somebody's day, you'll find yourself the one they all want to be with! Have fun today! Tell me in the forum what you did, and how people reacted!

National Peanut Butter Day

Are you a peanut butter lover? Have you been marking off the days of the calendar until today, National Peanut Butter Day? Well, even if you haven't been quite that extreme, I'm sure you'll enjoy today's holiday. Although it was originally processed for patients whose teeth were too weak to chew meat, today people can enjoy peanut butter, even if they have healthy teeth.
When my kids were taking lunches to school, I used to put peanut butter on a hot dog bun, and then insert a peeled banana. We called it a Banana Dog. It was a nice change from the customary peanut butter and jelly sandwich. About 100 years ago, when I was taking my lunch to school, my mother used to mix bacon bits into the peanut butter for my sandwiches. It was delicious!

January 23 is
National Compliment Day

Today is Compliment Day. What an important day! I think, however, that every day should be lived as if it were compliment day. Studies show that when you have to tell someone something negative, if you begin with something positive, they'll be much more receptive to the negative thing you have to say. People in this day and age are much less apt to give a compliment than 100 years ago.
If you have ever doubted the power of a compliment, be sure to read today's website link. You can find it by clicking on the picture. Today's video is a short clip from a fun movie, "The Perfect Holiday". It's light-hearted, but still shows the effectiveness of a compliment.
No matter what negative things you see in a person, you can always find something positive, if you look hard enough. Perhaps they have on nice clothes. Or maybe you like the color of their eyes. Maybe they are very friendly, or maybe there's something else you like about them. Even if you can't see anything positive, a compliment like, "Seeing you added a little sunshine to my day," can make a major difference in a person's life.
So try to compliment each person you see today. And, by the way, thank you for reading about the daily holiday today. You have chosen a great way to improve your English!

National Blonde Brownie Day

Maybe you thought Blondie was only a comic strip. Or maybe you thought it was just a nickname for a person with blond hair. Well, you were right about both of those, but Blondie is also the name for a brownie which isn't brown. It's blond instead.
Blondies are a delicious variation of the chocolate brownies that are so prevalent these days. The website of the day has a great recipe, or you can watch the video, Betty's Kitchen, and see how they're made. Betty adds some chunks of white chocolate, which, I'm sure, make a delicious treat even better!

National Skating Month

Is there anything as graceful as ice skating? Usually done to music, watching the beautiful skaters moving so smoothly across the silvery ice... it's better than dancing!
This is Ice Skating Month. When is the last time you went ice skating? I can remember going to skating parties, sitting on the snowbank next to the skating rink, putting on my skates, then skating (please don't tell anyone, but I fell almost as often as I made it across the pond). I decided that watching skating and drinking my hot chocolate at the same time is less hazardous to my health than all those bumps and bruises.

Homemade bread is such a treat, and with a bread machine, you can make it almost as easily as you can make toast. There are many styles in a wide price range, so you can probably find one that suits you to a T.
My dear husband makes homemade bread for us all the time. Sometimes it is just for a snack, and other times it is the highlight of the meal. Here is his recipe!

Alvin’s Daily Bread

Ingredients:
1 ¼ cup water
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons powdered milk
4 tablespoons vegetable oil
2 cups whole wheat flour
1 cup bread flour
2 tablespoons honey
½ cup oatmeal
1 ½ teaspoons active dry yeast

Instructions:
Follow bread machine instructions
Today's website has other delicious-sounding recipes, and the video is a great instructional video on using a bread machine in general, no matter which brand you have, and even if you have no manual.
It is Bread Machine Baking MONTH, so that means you can make several loaves throughout the month, and just keep on celebrating! Mmm, delicious!

Thesaurus day

It's Thesaurus Day! But for me, every day is thesaurus day. I use several online versions, but my very favorite is the Visual Thesaurus. You can see how it works in today's video.
So what is a thesaurus? Well, it is no relation to any of the dinosaurs, even though it sounds a dinosaur name. It is like a dictionary, but it tells you all the words that are synonyms (similar in meaning) and antonyms (opposite in meaning). I'm sure that you have noticed by now that there are many ways to express similar things in English. A thesaurus helps you to find exactly the right one!
So, have fun today, and check out a few words in a thesaurus. I think you'll find it fascinating!

Kid Inventors' Day

Today is Kid Inventors' Day. It's amazing to find out how many of the things we use every day were actually invented by people under 20 years old. Have you ever heard a kid talking about some cool idea, and his or her parent tells him to stop being silly? It could be that that silliness is actually the sowing of a seed of invention. Instead of trying to make a child "fit the norm", it might be better to offer encouragement for that brainstorming. You never know! That child might be the next Kid Inventor!

Have fun today, kids, and try something new!

Oatmeal Month

As today's website says, more oatmeal is consumed in the month of January than in any other month. As healthy as it is, we should probably try to keep that momentum going in the other months, too.
I can remember my mom making oatmeal in a pan like a crockpot. She'd put it on at night, with raisins, cinnamon, and mommy magic. In the morning, it tasted sooo good! (That's how I know she put mommy magic in it!)
I like to make oatmeal with or without raisins, but then, to sweeten it, I use a spoonful of "only fruit" jelly. It has no sugar in it, but it sweetens the oatmeal just enough to make it delicious, without adding any sugar. You might like it, too.

National Hot Tea Month

Do you only think about drinking tea when you're sick? Is "tea and toast" one of the most dreaded combinations you can think of, or does it remind you of times when your mom took care of you and you knew she cared?
You might be surprised to know that after water, tea is the most widely-consumed beverage in the world. Drinking herbal teas for the many health benefits, or drinking green tea for its weight loss effects, are becoming more and more popular. Drinking black tea has also been found to strengthen the immune system.
The four types of tea most commonly found on the market are black tea, oolong tea, green tea and white tea, all of which can be made from the same bushes, but are processed differently, and, in the case of fine white tea, grown differently.
The term "herbal tea" usually refers to an infusion or tisane of leaves, flowers, fruit, herbs or other plant material.

Clean up your computer month

Keeping our computer clean often goes to the end of the to-do list. We're just so busy, we can't stop using it to clean it and organize our files. Then, one very, very sad day, ZAP! The poor thing crashes, and we lose all of our documents, music, photos...
There are a few simple things you can do to keep things moving along smoothly.

1. Windows Update - this is very, very important. Run it at least once a week.
2. Defrag - check your main drive (usually C:) to see if it needs to be defragged. You can analyze your disk, and it will tell you whether or not it needs to be defragged.
3. Registry Mechanic - this solves many problems! I run it once a week at a minimum, sometimes once a day. You'll be amazed at how much difference it makes.
4. Sypbot Search & Destroy - no, it doesn't destroy your computer! It destroys the nasties, sometimes known as spyware or malware. I've used it for years, and it hasn't let me down yet.
5. Zappit - this just sort of shines things up after everything else is done.

Then, I just have to tell you two more things. When you uninstall a program, use Revo Uninstaller. You'll be amazed at how many little pieces of a program are left on your hard drive after you uninstall it. This program gets even the ones that are hiding very well.
Then, to be sure you don't lose your files, even if the computer crashes, please use Dropbox. This keeps a copy of all your files, music, pictures, etc "in the cloud". You can access them from anywhere, and they never disappear (unless you delete them, and even then, for a while, you can bring them back.)
Today's website has a detailed list of how to do things, and the video is a great tutorial on how to use Spybot.
OK, now don't put it off. It's too cold to play outside anyway, so just get it done now.

Bald Eagles are my husband's favorite animal. He loves to watch their determination, their beautiful flight, the power in their wings. Surprisingly, a few eagle couples decided to call Muskegon, my town, their home. One couple decided to build a nest in the tree of a house not too far from me. We drove over there to see it one day, and the nest is almost as large as our bathtub! They return to the same nest, year after year, and the family in that house has to monitor who comes into their yard, because they don't want the eagles to move somewhere else.
Today's video and websites are filled with interesting facts about these majestic birds. Enjoy!

National Soup Month

Soup is one of life's comfort foods. When I was in junior high school, my mom always had hot soup ready for lunch. I would walk home, about a mile, have my delicious, hot bowl of soup, then walk back for the afternoon classes. She made the best soup! She often put lentils in it, and my little brother called them flying saucers, the old-fashioned term for UFOs.
Today's website is a recipe that I made up for using what you have in your refrigerator to create an original soup. Its taste depends on what you use. You'll find that you usually love the results!

Now, you have to admit it. I'll bet you have rubbed a balloon on your hair and then tried to make it stick to the wall. Or you have walked across a carpeted room and then touched something metal, which gave you an electric shock. We have a dog who is afraid of EVERYTHING! I was once going to put her leash on her to take her for a walk, and I accidentally gave her an electric shock when touching her neck. She has never forgiven me. She still ducks when I'm going to put her leash on her.

I'm sure that organizing the home is one of the most common New Year's resolutions. It is a very good one, actually, because if our home is less cluttered, and if we can find the things we're looking for, we might have a little more of a sense of peace in 2011.
A few year's ago, I met Flylady (today's website). Many, many people have been helped by her suggestions. She divides all the work into little bits, and gives you just a little bit of work each day. If you can develop the habit, eventually, your house looks great!

National Bird Day

National Bird Day is a day to call attention to both pet and wild birds. Feeding wild birds is a rewarding hobby. There are many books and websites to guide you, and today's video will help you to identify some birds by their song.
I am very partial to pet birds. In fact, birds are my favorite animal. (Don't tell my dog and cat that!) At one time, some of my kids and I raised cockatiels and doves. In addition, we had a white-eyed conure, a pair of canaries and a parakeet. Did you know that if you heat a Teflon-covered pan or cookie sheet on your stove or in your oven, once it reaches high heat, the fumes will kill your pet bird within minutes? Those fumes are very toxic to birds, so be sure you protect them from that.

I'm still amazed. I never knew that spaghetti is the plural of the word spaghetto. If I asked my daughter what the singular of the word spaghetti is, she would undoubtedly say, "Not enough spaghetti!"
There are some variations of regular spaghetti. Spaghettoni is a thicker spaghetti which takes more time to cook. Spaghettini is a thinner version, sometimes called Angel Hair spaghetti.
In any case, it is usually served with tomato sauce, with or without meatballs. But today's video shows an interesting new twist on a sauce for your spaghetti. It looks really good! I can't wait to try it! I guess today is the day.

Sleeping is a hot topic of conversation in every age group. Babies usually don't sleep enough, which robs their parents of sleep. Teenagers usually sleep too much, causing their parents irritation. Busy people don't sleep enough, causing their bosses irritation when they fall asleep at their desk or during meetings. Older people often sleep a lot, which doesn't seem to bother anyone.
Today's website discusses many myths about sleep. I found it extremely informative. Watch the video if you just want to smile and relax. There is another set of videos which Truus found that are great for inducing sleep if you have trouble with that.
