English Vocabulary - Beach Reflections
Learn English vocabulary with this story, Beach Reflections, by Julie Mockerman.| My daughter is with me today. I’ve missed her smiles, and the little noises she makes. The extra work is worth it, to be with her, and to know she’s being treated gently and with respect. | | Now she slips in and out of a cozy sleep, just as the sun slips in and out of the grayness behind the clouds. One minute it makes the everyday smokestacks on the paper mill look like golden pillars in an azure sky. The next moment it slides behind the cold, winter-heavy clouds, making the landscape look like it has once again hit the snooze button. | | Other than a solitary straggler, even the gulls seem to be off somewhere else, perhaps choosing to tuck themselves in the hollow of a sand dune rather than be subjected to the chilly breeze this morning. The waves, too, seem to be in no hurry to begin their day, as they lazily tumble over each other’s edges toward the sand, preferring to soak into the shoreline rather than making the effort to roll back into the lake against the current of the next approaching wave. It’s good to see the calm, unhurried pace today, and to hear my daughter’s calm, rhythmic breathing as she sleeps in her wheelchair…even if the peace is only on this side of the dunes. |
