English Stories
I think my brain has changed. Most of the time, I try to think my thoughts in English. Often some words are missing, so I take the dictionary or search on the PC when it is possible. Now I will bring you my thoughts from today:
I had to shorten a pair of trousers. This reminds me of a time when I did a lot of sewing.
When our son was born, we had to be economical. I had not been working for five years. My mother-in-law and I sewed some clothes for ourselves and for my son, Norbert.
Since then, everything has changed and it is no longer economical to do this. Why? I will give you an example.
In the trousers are four zippers, one on each pocket and two in the trouser-leg. It is a training suit and so it includes a jacket. In the jacket are more zippers, a long one in front and a shorter one on each pocket.
When I think about the cost alone for these zippers, I would have to pay over 20 Euro. If I would sew these garments myself, I would also have to buy the fabric, the lining and the thread. Perhaps I would need a pattern, too. Altogether, it would be around 60 Euro. And finally, who knows if the clothing would fit?
I bought my training suit for 10 Euro! I only have to shorten the legs a little, because I am short. It was too difficult to keep the zippers where they were when the pants were shortened, so now these two zippers are unused. Could I sell these? Do you want to have these, perhaps for ten Euro? It is a bargain!
What are we doing today? We don't buy darning cotton, we buy new socks, and that is cheaper! We don't buy elastic, we buy new slips. We don't bring a broken toaster or iron for repair, we buy a new one.
We are really a throwaway society, but it is no wonder! Or is that a wonder in itself?
