Four Candles
---
Submitted by Irene Kessler
Four candles burned on the Advent wreath. In the quiet, the candles began to speak. The first candle sighed and said, “My name is PEACE. My light shines, but there is no peace.” Her light became smaller and smaller, until it faded away completely.

The second candle flickered and said, “My name is FAITH, but I am useless. People don’t want to know anything of God. There is no reason for me to burn.” A breeze blew through the room and the second candle went out.
Quiet and sad, the third candle began to speak, “My name is LOVE. I no longer have the strength to burn. People put me aside. They look only to themselves and not to the others they should have loved.” With a final flicker, this light also went out.
Then a little child entered the room. It looked at the candles and said, “You should be burning; you should not be dark!” And the child started to cry.
At that moment, the fourth candle began to speak and said, “Do not fear! As long as I burn, we are able to relight the other candles.
My name is HOPE.”
With that, the child, using the flame of HOPE, rekindled PEACE, FAITH and LOVE.
