One of my favorite ways to help students learn English is to read and discuss books in English.
Each week, members of the discussion group take a turn reading part of the book aloud. Next, I give suggestions for improving pronunciation, and we discuss any questions about words and phrases that are difficult to understand. Then we discuss our opinions and reactions to what we have read.
This has been very popular with the ESL learners. It is a great way to add new vocabulary to your list of "known words" and to add new friends to your list of "known people"!
Please check the the following book lists to see if any of them look interesting. Let's start a book-reading group!

| When Randy Pausch, a computer science professor at Carnegie Mellon, was asked to give such a lecture, he didn't have to imagine it as his last, since he had recently been diagnosed with terminal cancer. But the lecture he gave--"Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams"--wasn't about dying. It was about the importance of overcoming obstacles, of enabling the dreams of others, of seizing every moment (because "time is all you have...and you may find one day that you have less than you think"). It was a summation of everything Randy had come to believe. It was about living. This group will meet every Monday at this time. If you want to improve your pronunciation, vocabulary, and understanding of English, while having a great time and meeting new friends, an English Book Reading Discussion is the answer to your wishes. | ||||

Chicken Soup for the Traveler's Soul: Stories of Adventure, Inspiration and Insight to Celebrate the Spirit of Travel Discussion #1004915 |

| Like traveling itself, the stories in this book will take you on a journey of adventure, insight and discovery. Through the real-life experiences of others, you'll see that regardless of the destination, it is the journey that provides the fondest memories. You'll be inspired by these treasured tales of fellow travelers who formed lasting friendships, fell in love, challenged themselves and cherished the hospitality of others. These stories show that when traveling-as in life-sometimes it's the unplanned adventures that provide us with the most opportunities for growth; that a twist in the road or a change in our itinerary teaches us not to fear the unknown, but to welcome and savor its surprises. This group will meet every Thursday at this time. If you want to improve your pronunciation, vocabulary, and understanding of English, while having a great time and meeting new friends, this is the perfect answer! | ||||
