Amy and Arthur Teach English
Arthur: "Did my sister call you today, Amy?"

Amy: "No, why?"

Arthur: "She called me at work to tell me that her husband went to work yesterday and there was a sign on the door saying, "Out of Business". Then when he got back into his car to go home, it wouldn't start, and it needs to be repaired. With one fell swoop, their situation has become really bad."

Amy: "Wow, I feel for them! Maybe we should do away with gift giving this Christmas and give them the money we would have spent on gifts."

Arthur: "That's a good idea, Amy!"

A Short History of one fell swoop

It is thought that Shakespeare invented this phrase in his play, Macbeth. In this play, the wife and children of one of the characters are murdered, and this is compared to a hawk swooping down, or flying down quickly to grab its prey. Although fell meant cruel back then, it now means sudden.
