Mr. Johnson: (Arthur enters the office) "Arthur, I'm putting you in charge of the personnel department. I'd like you to begin today by firing the receptionist. We'll be dividing her duties among the other staff members, because the bottom line is we just can't afford her."

Arthur: "Wow, this is a rough way to begin the new position. The rest of the staff will think I'm coming on pretty strong."

Mr. Johnson: "Well, that may happen, but if we don't cut corners somewhere, they won't have their jobs anymore, either."
